Editing Environment Variables in Vista

Environment variables are the global objects which are created for the ease to System Administrators and average technical executives. Editing paths in environment variables helps in fast access of application and directories.

By default Windows XP / Vista configures “System” and “System32” subdirectories under Windows Folder for Environment Variables. Hence, it eases to access the programs in those directory from Run Command Box, or command prompt.

Below is a step-by-step guide to edit Environment Variables under Vista Platform.

Steps

1.  Right click on My Computer Icon and select Properties

2. On left side pane navigation, click on Advanced system settings.

3. On system settings window and advanced settings Tab, click Environment variables Button.

4. Select path variable and edit it. Further append the path for example “C:Program FilesMS Office”, followed by semicolon. Click Ok to save the variable.

5. Click Ok again to save the whole configuration of Environment Variables.

6. Now you are done, and user can access the MS Office directory variables from Run Command Button.
